North East Child Poverty Trust

We aim to mitigate and relieve child poverty in the North East of England

What is the North East Child Poverty Trust (NECPT)?

NECPT was registered as a charity by the Charity Commission in April 2015. The Trust’s mission and purpose is set out in our governing document. We aim to mitigate and relieve child poverty in the North East of England by:

  • Raising awareness of the issue of child poverty
  • Improving knowledge and understanding of the causes and consequences of, and solutions to, child poverty
  • Working collaboratively with public services, voluntary bodies, employers and young people to address child poverty

We work in partnership

NECPT’s main focus is to work in partnership with local organisations acting as an enabler/co-ordinator and raises funds for collaborative projects tackling child poverty and promoting the findings of this work to disseminate and secure practical changes to practice to combat child poverty.

Our Programmes

In summer 2017, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund we worked with Children North East to provide summer holiday activities across a range of mainly urban locations in the region. The programmes have supported children’s emotional and physical development and have also provided healthy eating opportunities for participants.

The 2017 programme was subject of a major evaluation report from Northumbria University published in 2018 demonstrating the health, personal and community benefits of the summer activity.

In 2019 we received funding of £95,000 for a Covid recovery programme across Northumberland. We are now delivering with our main partner Leading link a £300,000 3 year programme across the North of Tyne Area focussed on community led activity to support children and young people.

IMPACT TO DATE AND Next Steps

Dr Greta Defeyter’s Northumbria University published research on the 2017 holiday clubs programme identified a wide range of impacts and benefits, including:

  • Holiday clubs were seen as an important community resource building confidence among participants as well as engaging parents in wider community activity providing mutual support.
  • The focus on food provision enabled the spread of information about food and nutrition, food preparation and healthy cooking as well as an appreciation of budgeting.
  • Physical activity and play promoted social interaction and health benefits. The focus was on ‘a day out not a handout’ diminishing the stigma of food poverty and broadening the experience and personal development of those involved.
  • We aim to get a new programme up and running for 2021 to tackle the challenges of what we hope will be a post Covid 19 world.
